Born in Kingsford, Michigan USA, Marty is a television personality, treasure hunter, and an attorney, perhaps best known to the world for his appearance in the reality TV series “The Curse of Oak Island”, aired on History Channel since 2014, together with his brother Rick Lagina, owning a majority of the infamous Canadian island.

Early Life, Family, and Education

Marty has a brother Rick, and a sister Matina; unfortunately, there isn’t more information about his early life, including the identity of his parents. However, after finishing high school, Marty enrolled at Michigan Technological University, from which he received a degree in mechanical engineering, and later also obtained a law degree, and became a part of the Michigan State Bar.

Career Beginnings

Now a mechanical engineer, Marty started looking for a job in his niche, and found one with the Amoco Production Company in 1979 as a petroleum engineer. Learning about gas and oil in the next few years enabled him to start his own company in 1982 – Terra Energy Limited focused on the development of shale gas in Michigan, slowly growing in importance in Michigan’s shale gas distribution, and eventually becoming the largest operator in the business. After a number of successful years, Marty sold his company to CMS for $58 million.

Infatuated with Oak Island from an early age, and now a well-established businessman, Marty teamed up with his brother Rick to secure a controlling interest in Oak Island Tours, which reportedly owns most of the island. They were successful in their efforts, and after a while Marty and Rick were approached by Prometheus Entertainment, which soon resulted in a reality show -“The Curse of Oak Island”. Since its launch in 2014, Marty and Rick have introduced audiences to the history of the Oak Island and its mysteries, including in the search for a treasure in such areas of the island as the “Money Pit”, Smith’s Cove, “Borehole 10-x”, “Nolan’s Cross”, and others. The show became popular with the public, attracting more than three million viewers per episode. So far, there have been five seasons and 62 episodes made, with the last aired on the 6th March 2018. The show’s popularity further increased Marty’s already impressive net worth. Additionally, Marty was one of the leaders to start the spin-off show “The Curse of Oak Island: Drilling Down” (2016-2018), while most recently he teamed up with Robert Clotworthy and Kevin Dykstra to start a search for (apparently) lost Civil War gold in Michigan. Their search has been based on a deathbed confession from a lighthouse keeper in the 1890s, and is showcased in the reality show “The Curse of Civil War Gold”.
