Early Life and Education

Chief Keef spent his childhood at the Parkway Garden Homes in the Washington Park, where he was raised by a single mother, Lolita Carter, who was just 16 years old when she gave birth to him; he has never met his biological father. His mother struggled to support him, so when he was a minor, he moved in with his grandmother who became his legal guardian. Those circumstances led him to do all sorts of things in order to survive, and he frequently got into trouble with gangs and drugs at an early age. He went to Dulles Elementary School as well as the Banner School, which was a therapeutic day school for kids with psychological issues. Afterwards, he enrolled in Dyett High School, however, he dropped out at 15 due to disciplinary problems.

Career Beginnings

Chief Keef was always interested in rapping – it is claimed that he started rapping when he was only five years old, using a machine for karaoke and some blank tapes to record ‘his music’. His musical career officially began in 2011, when he released his debut mixtape “The Glory Road”, followed by another entitled “Bang”, and caught the attention of Chicago’s South Side community. However, he was arrested for unlawful possession of a gun, so was under house confinement for some time.

Rise to Fame

Nonetheless, he continued to make music, and posted a few videos on his YouTube account. During that period he also released the mixtape “Back From The Dead” (2012) and the song “I Don’t Like” featuring Lil Reese, which pretty soon became a hit in Chicago, peaking at No. 73 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, and achieved platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Its popularity escalated quickly, and he was spotted by Kanye West, who made a remix of it.

Debut Album

All of these things contributed enormously to Chief Keef’s recognition, and he soon signed a contract with Interscope Records, in 2012, and his debut studio album entitled “Finally Rich” came out later that year, on which he collaborated with such famous rappers as 50 Cent, Young Jeezy, Wiz Khalifa and others. The album debuted at No. 29 on the US Billboard 200 chart, as well as No. 2 on the Top Rap Albums chart, adding a considerable amount to his net worth.

Mixtapes and Other Studio Albums

In 2013, Chief Keef was featured on Kanye West’s track “Yeezus”, after which he started working on his new album. During the same period, he began experimenting with the production of his music, and released such mixtapes as “Bang 2” (2013), “Back From The Dead 2” (2014) and “Sorry 4 The Weight” (2015), a 20-track mixtape, but all of which increased his popularity. His second studio album entitled “Bang 3” was eventually released in August 2015, and it reached No. 131 on the US Billboard 200 chart. In September of the same year out came his next studio album – “Bang 3, Pt. 2” – which peaked at No. 104 on the same chart.

Recent Years

He has now also released the mixtapes “Thot Breaker” and “Dedication” both in 2017, and “The Leek 4” early in 2018.
